A modular kitchen is one of the best upgrades you can make to a home. It looks neat, it stores more, and it makes daily cooking easier. But a good kitchen needs good planning. Whether your home is in Hyderabad, Warangal or Bangalore, these 7 simple steps will help you plan a modular kitchen that works for your family for years.
1. Choose the right kitchen layout
The layout decides how easy your kitchen is to use. Pick one based on the size and shape of your space:
- L-shaped kitchen: the most popular choice for 2BHK and 3BHK flats. It uses two walls and leaves open floor space.
- Parallel kitchen: two counters facing each other. Great for long, narrow kitchens.
- U-shaped kitchen: three walls of storage. Best for larger kitchens and families who cook a lot.
- Straight kitchen: one wall only. Good for small flats and studio homes.
- Island kitchen: an extra counter in the middle. Suits villas and open-plan homes with more space.
2. Plan the work triangle
Keep the stove, sink and fridge close to each other, in a rough triangle. This saves steps while cooking. Avoid placing the sink and stove right next to each other, and keep some counter space between them for cutting and preparing food.
3. Pick a strong cabinet material
The cabinet body, called the carcass, must handle heat, water and daily use. For the sink area, choose water-resistant boiling water proof (BWP) plywood. HDHMR board is another good option for many areas of the kitchen. Ask your designer which material is used for each part, not just the shutters.
4. Select the shutter finish
Shutters are the doors you see every day, so choose a finish that fits your style and budget:
- Laminate: strong, easy to clean and comes in many colours. A great everyday choice.
- Acrylic: high gloss and modern. Looks premium but needs gentle cleaning.
- PU finish: smooth, rich look with custom colours. Best for luxury kitchens.
- Membrane: good for curved and detailed designs.
5. Plan smart storage
Good storage is what makes a modular kitchen special. Think about what you store and plan for it:
- Deep drawers for pots, pans and heavy vessels
- A tall unit for groceries and daily supplies
- Corner solutions so the corners are not wasted
- Cutlery, plate and bottle pull-outs near the cooking area
- Wicker or wire baskets for vegetables
6. Choose the countertop and backsplash
Granite is a popular countertop in Telangana homes because it is strong and handles heat well. Quartz is another clean, modern option. For the wall behind the stove, use tiles or another easy-to-clean backsplash so oil and spice stains wipe off quickly.
7. Do not forget lighting, chimney and electrical points
Plan these early, before the cabinets are made:
- Under-cabinet lights so the counter is bright while cooking
- A chimney of the right size for your stove
- Enough power points for the mixer, microwave, water purifier and other appliances
How much does a modular kitchen cost?
The cost depends on the size of the kitchen, the layout, the materials, the shutter finish and the hardware you choose. The best way to know the real cost is a site visit and an itemised quote. At GIP Interiors, the first consultation and site visit are free, and complete home interiors start from Rs 3.5 Lakhs.
